Dear Friends,

I’d like to share today’s post with a short personal story. Somewhat of a humorous prelude to the message I would like to share with you all today.

Earlier this week I was working in my yard, beginning to get my plants ready for the coming winter months. In one section of my yard, I have a beautiful, small shrub. This shrub has been there for years and being a hardy little plant, it has never required any real care from me. With the exception of raking some leaves from it’s base a few times a year, I’ve never really done much more to tend to the plant.

However, while raking in that general area the other day I noticed that a section of the shrub had died off and the branches needed to be pruned. So I went to grab my trusty pruning saw and shears, deciding that after I removed the dead branch I would shape the bush a little. Now let me tell you my friends. I have admired this little shrub many, many times over the years. I have touched it, examined it, etc. It is uniquely colored and beautiful…a true masterpiece of Gaia’s art.
But do you know what else this little shrub is my friends? It is painful! Yes, painful. Imagine my shock when I reached down to snip a branch away and had to quickly pull back a stinging, bleeding hand because that beautiful little plant had unleashed it’s prickly fury upon me. You see, unbeknownst to me (though as I said I have examined this plant on multiple occasions) beneath each little leaf on the plant there is a very sharp little thorn just waiting to attack those that attempt to violate it. The wonders of Gaia can not only be beautiful, but dangerous or even deadly as well.

After my little adventure with the shrub (I did manage to carefully get it pruned) I started thinking about the dark side of Mother Nature and how it can affect us in our lives and magick. Yes, it is true that our Mother Earth has provided so much for us that can benefit our lives, health and magick. But it is also true that there are plants, animals and other forces of nature that can be very dangerous and should be approached with caution.

Plants are a very important part of our magickal spells and are also used in traditional, holistic medicine for healing. I cannot stress to you enough how important it is when using plants for anything at all, that you know exactly what plant you are using and how to use it. Many plants can easily be mistaken for one another, and some may be safe when used in one manner but deadly when used in another. Even if you purchase specific plant species to grow yourself for use in magick or healing, it can be dangerous to consume or apply these herbs to your skin if they are not grown properly. Plants that have been contaminated by chemicals or even animal urine or feces can have extremely negative side effects on the body. If you are unsure of whether a plant is safe for use or not, do not take a chance. Do not use it. Instead, purchase the plant from a quality supplier that guarantees safe, organic products.

This level of safety should extend to all items you obtain from nature. Use care and safety when burning woods or plant materials, as some plants can create fumes that can make you very sick. Some plants or wood pieces can even create a topical allergic reaction in some individuals. If you know that you are going to prefer harvesting your own natural materials from nature, I urge you to take the time to properly study plant life so that you can properly identify a plant and understand it’s dangers as well as it’s benefits. Mother Nature is a loving, caring mother that has provided us with everything we need to survive. But you must also always remember, she has a dark side as well that can be dangerous or deadly to those that do not take heed.

Dear Friends,

Like I have stated before, I personally do not believe that it is possible for us to plan every activity in our life using electional astrology. Not only do you never know what may happen in a day to throw your plans off, but some activities that must be performed may be impossible to coincide with the right moon aspect.

However, there are a number of different things that you may find you can plan out so that they are performed during the right moon aspect to help improve their success. And if you cannot find a way to perform the activity during the right moon aspect, you may be able to at least prevent performing it during a moon aspect that will cause your activity to end with disastrous results. Here are some common tasks that people perform in their daily lives and what moon aspect will provide the best, or worst, results.

Buying a Vehicle

Try to buy a vehicle, new or used, during when the moon is in the sign of Capricorn or Gemini.

Beauty Treatments

Have beauty treatments like facials, massages, etc., performed when the moon is in Aquarius, Leo, Cancer, Taurus or Libra. If you are having plastic surgery, try to avoid scheduling surgery when the moon is in aspects to Mars.

Buying Clothing

Buy new clothing when the moon is in good aspect with a sign ruled by Mercury or Venus. Do not buy clothing when the moon is in Aries or Scorpio.

Cultivating Ground for Planting

Cultivate your garden ground when the moon waning and is in a dry, barren sign such as Aquarius, Gemini, Aries or Virgo.

Home Decorating

Decorate your home during a waxing moon when the moon is in the signs of Aquarius, Gemini or Libra.

Hosting a Party

Hosting a party or entertaining friends is best done when the moon is in Libra or Leo.

Composting and Fertilizing Your Garden

Add compost and fertilizer to your garden under a fruitful moon sign such as Scorpio, Cancer or Pisces. If you are using chemical fertilizers, apply during these signs when the moon is waxing. For organic fertilizers, apply when the moon is waning.

Breaking Bad Habits

If you want to break a bad habit, begin to quit the habit when the moon is in its fourth quarter and is in either Aries, Virgo, Capricorn, Gemini or Leo.

Mowing your Lawn

Mow grass during waxing phase of the moon if you wish to increase lushness and growth, or during the waning moon if you desire to decrease grass growth.

Pruning Plants

Prune plants during the third and fourth quarter under a Scorpio moon to produce better fruit. For weak or sickly plants, prune during a Capricorn moon to promote healing.

Lose Weight

The best time to start a diet to lose weight is during a third or fourth quarter moon when the moon is in Virgo, a barren sign.

These are just some of the activities that can be planned using electional astrology. As I have stated before, if you elect to use these methods to help improve the outcome of your daily activities, it is best to purchase moon charts and a guide on electional astrology that provides more in-depth information.

When you begin to consider the moon and it’s impact on your life, you may be truly amazed at the difference the moon and it’s position in the stars can have on your life.

Dear Friends,

The moon is a very powerful source in our lives. One of the most recognizable symbols of the Goddess, even non-believers of the Craft can see the power of the moon by the way she is able to have such a profound effect on the ocean tides here on Earth. For hundreds of years, people have believed that the moon could affect a persons moods and sanity. In fact, the word lunacy which means insane or crazy, comes from the Latin word for moon, Luna. It should come as no surprise, that scientific studies performed in moderns times have indeed proven that the moon has the power to have a strong influence over our moods and emotions, just as our ancestors have long believed.

What many people are unaware of, is that the moon is so powerful it can have a profound influence on everything in our lives. I have talked before about the phases of the moon, as well as the aspects of the moon as it is ruled by each planet, or zodiac sign. During each of these phases and aspects, activities you perform may be considered favorable, or unfavorable under the moon’s influence. Many people refer to this as electional astrology, or using the moon and stars to “elect” when you will perform a certain task.

For some, this is the only way to live. I know a handful of people that will not perform any major task, and even a number of minor ones, without first determining the phase and aspect of the moon. For me personally, I do not find it absolutely necessary to plan every little aspect of my life by the phases and aspects of the moon. Would I like to use electional astrology more and do I believe if would help improve the outcome of some things I have to do? Absolutely! But I must be realistic. There are going to be events in your life and things that must be done, and you just may simply not be able to take care of your responsibilities on days that are astrologically favorable. Electional astrology should not be considered a diehard “rule” to follow, but more a guideline or helpful tool to use when possible.

In order to utilize electional astrology in your life, one of the most important things you will need to know is when the moon will be in its various phases and aspects. I find the best way to do this is to buy a moon sign book. There are various publishing houses that publish annual moon sign books that will provide you with detailed charts and tables that include when the moon will be moving from one phase to the next and when it will be changing aspects. Many of these books are so detailed they will even provide the time of day these events will occur. Using a moon sign book, you can keep track of the moon’s movement and plan certain events accordingly.

The next step in adopting electional astrology into your life is to learn when the most favorable and unfavorable times are to perform certain tasks. In next weeks blog post, I will go over some very common tasks performed in our every day lives and when it is a favorable or unfavorable time to perform such tasks. In addition, I would highly recommend looking online or looking for a book that provides in-depth coverage of electional astrology and would provide far more information on activities and when to perform them than I will be able to cover here on the blog.
